GET READY! RADICAL GUARDIAN SKATER X #1 DROPS THIS WEDNESDAY!
That’s right everbody, it’s an all-new, all-action tokusatsu adventure series from me, joebloodyhunter and twobitjusticeleague, with a logo design by bigredrobot, and it’s out on Comixology on Wednesday, September 3!
It’s the first issue of an ongoing series that’s a loving homage (well, that’s the nice way to put it, anyway) to Kamen Rider and Super Sentai, with all the high school drama and rubber-suited monsters that you could possibly want:

Ramp City High School has a big problem: students are turning into monsters whenever they’re faced with stress — and for teenagers, there’s stress around every corner. Good thing skateboard champ Theo and tech whiz Ria are there to stop them, but when the mid-term menace of Testor tears up the library, will they be thrashed before they even start?

Catch the full issue and spread the word, Action Agents! The Ramp City Revolution starts now!
(Well. It starts on Wednesday, but you get the idea).

AW YEAH! This week’s new Zero Issues is up!

This week we talk about August’s comic movies, which means this episode is mostly the three of us raving about Guardians of the Galaxy, with a solid eight minutes of me ranting about how terrible the Ninja Turtles movie was - y’know, just for good (bad?) measure. And we completely ignore Sin City 2, just like the rest of the world. Check it out, fellow nerdlingers!

The last few weeks in videogame culture have seen a level of combativeness more marked and bitter than any beforehand.

First, a developer—a woman who makes games who has had so much piled on to her that I don’t want to perpetuate things by naming her—was the target of a harassment campaign that…

And good riddance.

catandkitty:

do you know why feminism has a horrible image?

i’ll let you in on a secret here, it’s because people hate women

11th doctor: haha…. got u good…. *dies*

Regarding the whole feminism debacle, don't you think that a website like Cracked should probably not take sides on issues like this and begin alienating fans?

[Speaking on behalf of myself and not Cracked-at-Large, the policies and shape of which are not under my sole jurisdiction.]

I’m not talking/thinking about every sub-faction of feminism and every misguided protest or action that has resulted from a misinterpretation OF feminism, because feminism is such a huge thing and, as Soren pointed out, not everyone is going to be getting it right, all the time. There will be feminist spin-off groups that don’t quite grasp the message, there will be groups that pervert and distort it for their own agenda, and there will be groups that go overboard and so on, but that is true of literally every movement (civil rights-related, political, religious or otherwise) in the history of time.

I’m by no means an expert, which is why I’m trying to learn, but what I think about when I talk about feminism is what I remember being articulated to me by my sisters-in-law and what I saw/see embodied by my Mom’s example (and my Dad’s, for that matter), and it’s a really simple and clear message to me: Equal political, economic and social rights for men and women. There are smaller and more specific aspects of this broader conversation that are a particular focus of mine (representation in fiction/pop culture, educating people to help make an America where a woman can walk down the street at night feeling exactly as safe as I do, every night of my freaking life [which is to say, very]), but the core remains the same:  Equality where it doesn’t currently exist.

So, when you talk about “taking sides,” my knee-jerk response is, uh, what’s your side? I’m not trying to be glib here. I could be wrong but, according to my slow, caveman brain, if my side is equality for men and women then the other side must be inequality, right? And if that’s the case, then, no, I don’t feel any responsibility to give the other side representation in my writing. There’s the potential that in doing so I’ll be alienating readers that either want men to have more rights than women or women to have more rights than men, but that’s a risk I’m absolutely fine with.

I know everyone is talking about this, but I honestly hadn’t realized that Marvel had already done so many Milo Manara variant covers. Probably because most of these were not included as a graphic in the solicitations sent out promoting these series. I found another batch, which include something truly shocking. I’ll post it in a moment.

I get the concept of HEY LOOK THIS DUDE IS A MODERN MASTER OF FUCKIN’ SEQUENTIAL STORYTELLING ANTS CAN’T CRITICIZE EAGLES MAYBE IF YOU HAD AN OUNCE OF CLASS YOU’D REALIZE THAT SWEET PIC OF SPIDER-WOMAN’S ASS HAS MORE ARTISTIC CREDIBILITY THAN A HUNDRED THOUSAND ISSUES OF DUMB OL’ SPIDER-MAN YOU ILLITERATE PLEBES.

Manara is totally a respected artist with a decades-long resume of making beloved art, much of it coincidentally involving naked women doing lots of things that some non-drawn women find distasteful or offensive. But artistic credibility usually trumps what non-drawn women feel, and the entire concept of context isn’t even worth discussing because the second someone is afraid of being called sexist SHIT. GOES. OFF.

I mean, I totally respect Simon Bisley as a venerated champion of drawing veiny dudes graphically murdering each other, but if they hyped up the new family-friendly all-ages Power Pack book with a prominently displayed cover by Simon Bisley where Alex Power is shredded and covered head to prominently bulging package with Snark gore while the rest of the Power kids grin menacingly on a pile of bones, I bet a few people might question the decision without being immediately shouted down that YOU DON’T KNOW A GODDAMN THING ABOUT THE LEGACY OF 2000 AD YOU’D GET LAUGHED OFF THE ISLAND MATE THAT’S HOW COMICS WORK YOU WANT TO TAKE FOOD OUT OF SIMON BISLEY’S MOUTH IS THAT IT?

Let’s all go to the movies! This week, in the first of our two-part look back at the comic book flicks of 2014, the guys discuss Captain America: The Winter Soldier (with some Agents of SHIELD thrown in for good measure), The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and X-Men: Days of Future Past. This…
